Daniel VanderWerff is the writer and artist behind the webcomic School Spirit. Known as Dutch to some because of his family background and tendency to like the colour orange and collect little trinkets to display in his glass cabinets, he lives in a little rural community in southeastern Victoria, Australia and regularly spends his Saturday mornings throwing boots at the kangaroos to get them off his lawn.

In real life he is also known fondly as Mr V, although he is generally only called such by the children he teaches at his primary school. Occasionally their parents also use this moniker. He teaches grades three and four (about nine to ten years of age) and at this stage still has the kids bluffed that he knows exactly what he is doing. He thinks he's probably pretty safe though, because if the kids are clever enough to work it out, then they're clever enough to realise what a good wicket they're on and won't grizzle.

In his free time he fiddles on the piano and acoustic guitar and regularly gives himself carpet burns once a week playing indoor cricket and diving for catches on snythetic pitches. It is true that he does actually use such apparently cliched Australian words as g'day, struth, fair dinkum and hooroo in his daily speech.
