Style and Writing

Dasien is often referred to as "pseudo-manga", but considered by its author as a hodgepodge. While manga elements do exist, there is also equal amounts of influence from western superhero comics and, most notably, Archie comics.

There is a conscious effort to extend the comic beyond the scope of the usual superhero concentration on powers and tedious origin stories. The story actually centers around the relationships and interconnectedness of characters. The friendship between Dasien and Parker is pivotal the series and extends the plot much farther beyond merely "saving the day". There are other atypical superhero elements, such as a refreshing appreciation for humor usually considered outside the scope of superhero comics.

Characters

  • Dasien/Michelle knight - Michelle Knight is a journalist working for Century Magazine and is also Dasien. Her extraordinary powers were given to her via a virus vector, injected by the genius, Dr. Sorge. Michelle moved into Dominian City a few years ago and now serves as the city's primary defender.
  • Parker Lynn Bailey - Parker is Michelle's best friend and works for the Dominian Tribune. The two girls regularly team up on journalist assignments and reap the rewards for their respective publications. Currently, Parker is the only one who knows Michelle's superhero secret.
  • Marshall Brody - An oversized action hero who is in town to investigate the smuggling a recent technological weapon.
  • Lord Crimson - Angry and affluent, Lord Crimson is the leader of the Crimson Gestalt, a fierce extermination squad that hunts superheroes. And while he's at it, he wouldn't mind leaving his mark on history, either.
  • Rouge - Rouge is the stealth operative of the Gestalt. Her ability to cloak her appearance gives her unique spy abilities. She's also the resident genius of the Gestalt and likes to bury herself in her books.
  • Maroon - The snivveling cynic of the Gestalt. Maroon's eye are set on Crimson's role as leader. He believes that he will one day be leader.
  • Ruby - A master of illusion, Ruby is the Gestalt's resident chameleon. He can use his special illusion-generating jewel to produce environmental obstacles that don't actually exist.
  • Red - Big on muscles; low on common sense. Red is all brawn. His powers keep going up and up and up and up every time he gets angry.
  • The Gooch - An enigma in Dominian City. Seldom seen, the Gooch is actually at the center of everything that transpires in the story.

Restart

Dasien originally debuted on Keenspace (now Comic Genesis) in April of 2002, telling a much more vague version of the story. Due to the rather poor scripting and even less impressive art, Neil decided to restart the series near the end of 2003. The restarted comic debuted on Drunkduck in early 2004 and eventually returned to Comic Genesis as well. The beginning of the Comic Genesis version was reset to start on January 1, 2005. Both archives are in synch in terms of updates.
