DUE EAST - BOOK ONE
Douglas Hu and Crystal Mills are a "BLASIAN" family (Doug is mixed Asian and White and Crystal is Black). They have two mixed-race daughters, Sapphira and Brielle.
Doug and Crystal divorced six years ago. At that time, Douglas' 13 year old daughter, Sapphira, insisted on moving with him to Canada. Sapphira's mother and younger sister, Brielle, chose to remain in Austin, Texas. Crystal stayed in contact with Douglas through letters during those six years, mainly to be kept up-to-date about Sapphira's well-being. Over the years, Crystal and Douglas redeveloped their own relationship and decided to reconcile. Now Douglas and Sapphira have returned home to Austin.
Upon their return, Sapphira meets and befriends Brielle's best friend, Carolyn Maye (who happens to be a nondenominational Christian). Sapphira has trouble reconnecting with Brielle, though, and spends most of her time by herself at the corporate hotel room that her dad's company pays for. She doesn't really relate to her mom anymore, either. So, it is difficult for Sapphira to transition to being back in Texas. She also gains quite a bit of weight during her first few months back in town.
A freak storm blows into town and nearly kills Brielle while she is home alone. Sapphira arrives unexpectedly and is able to stabilize Brielle's condition well enough for an ambulance to transport her to the hospital. Sapphira also gets in touch with her parents and lets them know what has happened. They rush to the hospital and the family rallies together to support Brielle and each other.
DUE EAST - BOOK TWO
Brielle is at home recovering, with the assistance of her mother, father and sister. Brielle is trying to understand exactly what happened to her the night of the storm, which also included a rather incredible dream. The dream challenged her perceptions about herself, about her family and just about everything she has believed for a long time. She has told noone about the dream yet.
