Fortune's Fools is a light-hearted, anachronistic fantasy set in the court of insane King Charles IV of France during the Hundred Years' War with the English crown. In an unstable court, filled with intrigue and a profound detachment from reality, the story follows the activities of Captain of the Guard Gektar, the Germanic barbarian seemingly from a long forgotten time period, his naive personal slave Heinrich, the avaricious Celeste d'Argent and Pierre Leblanc, an overly-ambitious courtier with designs on the kingdom itself.

Plot
A tenuous peace has been reached in the ongoing war between France and England. Gektar, a recently arrived adventure-seeking barbarian from the east, has been made Captain of the King's Guard much to the annoyance of his depressed manservant, Heinrich. Neither is aware that trouble is brewing beneath the surface, as the nobles not only compete for the favour of a mad king, but also for control of the kingdom itself. Gektar and Heinrich take it upon themselves to protect the kingdom from its internal instability, all the while surrounded by those hoping to profit from the chaos.
