The two main characters, Greg and Dana, are introduced.
Dana discovers Greg is being bullied by their classmates, but he won't say why.
Greg tells Dana he can't be friends with her and ignores her the next day at school.
Greg's bullies reveal to the school that he is actually half-logos, word spreads quickly through the town.
Greg tells Dana his father was a soldier during the Cleansing who took pity on his mother and older brother, helped them escape, then fell in love with his mother.
Since it's against logos law to interact with the local population, Greg's parents are arrested and there is a warrent out for him.
Greg runs away from home and meets up with Dana who has had a fight with her parents for being friends with Greg.
They both decide to leave the planet.

Greg and Dana reach space and land in the port city of Vera'ja.
There they meet a woman named Rae who decides to show them around the city.
The group is ambushed by a mob because of Greg's heritage as a logos, a race which is rather despised due to their colonizing practices.
They are rescued by a logos man who introduces himself as Pat.
Seeing they have nowhere to go, Pat invites them back to the ship on which he lives.
Overhearing Pat and the captain, Oz, argue whether the three of them can stay aboard the ship, Rae realizes they're on a rather infamous pirate ship named the "Gunmetal Annie".
Oz finally caves and allows the three newcomers to stay aboard the ship, provided they work.

Takes place four months after the previous chapter.
Goes over some of Greg's shapeshifting lessons with Pat.
Dana and Pat have grown obviously close during this time, they both work in the engine room together.
Oz calls a meeting for Greg, Dana, Rae, and Pat, detailing their next "job"; they will be robbing the casino ship the "Northern Endurance". They will be disguised as guests at a dinner party the ship is throwing.
After the meeting, Pat reveals to Greg that he has a crush on Dana.
Rae and Greg suggest Pat ask Dana to be his date at the dinner party on the casino ship.

Dana and Pat are getting along great at the dance.
Greg reveals to Rae that he had feelings for Dana, but is happy just as long as she is.
Oz and Vic leave to drain the safes' accounts while the others are left on the dance floor to watch out for security.
A suspicious-looking man is seen cutting one of the security boxes shortly before a few armed people burst into the dinner party and demand people hand over their valuables.
While the men are gathering the money and jewelry, their leader decides to raid the bar where Greg and Rae are hiding.
The alarm suddenly goes off, Rae knocks the man out with a heavy bottle, and Greg is grabbed by the men in the confusion.
