Plot
In a world that could very almost be ours, in a future that isn�t that far away, an apocalyptic change is taking place� Things are killing people. They take human form but are formless, are deadly but not alive. And the rulers of the world are despairing� They are called the Geists. No one knows where the came from, what they want, or how to destroy them. The UN has an emergency conference, deciding upon the continuing concealment of the existence of the Geists, and hiring a company to exterminate them. The IJSS brings together operatives from all over the globe to fulfil this role, and this web manga is the saga of their battle�
The four main protagonists, Kichi, Aeris, Hyaku and Kenji Kuro are a dedicated, (most of the time), combat team, who reveal a great deal about the human condition, and their continuing fight against an ever increasing army of adversaries is an action filled exploration of the human psyche. They and their team, (codename Project: Jyuunishi), are world-renowned experts brought together to protect what is left of humanity. There just happens to be a couple of things that the IJSS neglected to tell them� Things so devastating that they might just bring about the end of the world�
Project Jyuunishi may be full of clich�s, but it also defies them. All of the characters have their basis in people who are real and this adds a dimension of reality. The story is Gothic, humorous, sci-fi and horror all rolled into one� And also has a very, very unexpected conclusion�

This introduces the main characters and some of the themes which will dominate the comic.

This shows how the IJSS were contracted to eliminate the Geists and takes the reader through a single Jyuunishi operation, from the beginning to the conclusion, and the aftermath.

- It can be confirmed at this point that there will be thirteen chapters of Project Jyuunishi, not including "Departures" which are stories about single characters, and various art postings and one-off comics. This comic has a definite and unavoidable ending.

Kenji seems, at first glance, like every girls� worst nightmare! Although it is certainly true that he has an unhealthy obsession with the opposite sex, he is actually a great person to be around, with an electrifying sense of humour and an infectious laugh. He doesn�t seem to get on well with others, but beneath the surface it is possible that a need for others� attention lurks. He is a brilliant hacker, and could almost certainly get a job with any of the leading computer companies� but he seems happy enough� for now�.

Kichi can often be belligerent and bad tempered, and strongly dislikes having to live with the other Jyuunishi � or so she claims. It is possible that she secretly enjoys having people she can rely on and seems to have become particularly close to the other members of the combat team. She also likes cute fluffy things� but shhhh! It�s a secret! In addition to this, she is the Jyuunishi�s secret weapon, capable of winning against a Geist twice her height and weight. She has had extensive martial arts training, and has a particular penchant for Bruce Lee movies.

Hyaku has a pacifistic and sometimes irritating personality, and tends to like people, regardless of whether or not they like her. She likes reading and often has to act as the peacemaker. Although she has an extreme dislike of violence, she is perfectly capable of using it when provoked. She enjoys life and the ideal of saving people, and can be contrastingly word weary and dangerously na�ve. Hyaku traps the Geists using ectoplasmic ropes, and because of this has had to learn agility, despite her naturally clumsy disposition. She is also very fast, and makes up for these short bursts of activity by sleeping too much!

Aeris is sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, but is always cynical and often impatient. She has adapted well to �family� life, generally by ignoring the chaos around her and only interfering when absolutely necessary. She also reads often, and likes climbing � but dislikes heights! There are times when she has to protect her team from the problems they cause, and sometimes she is the cause of them. She hates school, and attempts to get out of it as often as possible. She is the older sister of Midori. Aeris has many guns, of varying sizes, of which she is very attached to. She likes to polish them while listening to heavy metal, and often gives them names. Her favourite is called Nikita.

Noriko can get you anything, anywhere, anytime - but her real wares are information. She is an outgoing, generally happy person, who probably should have been a fashion designer. However, her talent for wrapping people around her little finger makes her ideal for the extortion of almost any kind of information. She also loves fast cars and expensive restaurants � and is in every way a lady, (well, from 9-5 when she works in the advertising division of the corporation!).

Ryu does appear to be a calm sort of guy � but is easily provoked by Kenji, which reveals him to be much more highly strung then he first appears, even comically so. He has to rescue the Jyuunishi from various scrapes, and although he does tire of this he enjoys the freedom that his job brings. He is a skilled manipulator and almost always gets his own way. He often distracts people with throwaway comments and confusing asides, and thus few people can detect his real motives. He loves French art house cinema. He is a �cleaner� � someone who covers everything up and makes the evidence disappear. He is very, very good at this. So good, in fact, that almost all the records of him before the age of eighteen have vanished without trace�

Taria is ideally suited for her job � she�s just one of those people that people are willing to tell anything with a little bit of cajoling. One man found this so incredible he asked her to marry him within minutes of meeting her, (don�t worry, she declined). She is punctual, kind, and an all-round nice person � with a fondness for watching James Bond movies.

Lian takes no nonsense from anyone, under any circumstances at all. She is not as patient as her MD would suggest. She has the unfortunate job of repairing the combat team after their generally successful but damaging missions. She is an excellent doctor and a leading geneticist� but she has inexplicably given up a potentially very rewarding career to work for the IJSS and caring for a bunch of wayward teenagers� Lian apparently originates from Germany but one of her parents was born in mainland China. She does not talk about herself. The other Jyuunishi do not know her very well and she does not seem to like them either. However, it is possible that she does have a good side and she likes poetry and practices tai chi.

Midori is Aeris� little sister. They fight, as most siblings do. The corporation noticed her talent for engineering and decided to apprentice her to their master mechanic. Other than her liking for cogs, wheels and engine oil, Midori is a normal tweenage girl. She likes pop music, the colour pink, and shares Kichi�s secret passion for teddy bears.

Yuan is a precocious fourteen year old, whose cuteness often allows him to get away with murder. He doesn�t always get along well with others, but he tends to be liked, particularly by girls. When he�s older he wants to be an entomologist, and will probably work for the corporation, as he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of spider venoms which could be used in genetic engineering. Loves his job � just hates the act.

Tadakatsu likes to build things. All kinds of things. His toasters probably emit ear splitting radio waves. You�ve been warned. Tadakatsu can build anything. That means anything. As has already become apparent, the IJSS have a talent for amassing the best of the best, and Tadakatsu should really be off making a million dollars from his dozens of un-patented inventions. Tadakatsu cooks as if he has the only kitchen in the world, and drives like he is the only one on the road. He lives dangerously but eats well and exercises often. He looks after his apprentice and is generally considered to be �nice�. Make of that what you will�
The Creators
Kichi is the artist, who draws mainly in the manga style. She is also a very competent computer artist. She is also bilingual.
Kuro Hyakutake [[9]]
Hyakutake handles mainly the story of Jyuunishi... and knows the ending! Hyaku cannot draw at all and feels a little left out...
Kuro Aeris [[10]]
Aeris writes the dialogue for the comic from Hyaku's basic outlines...and also knows the ending! She can also draw very well...
and
Kuro Kenji [[11]]
Kenji provides the moral support and comic relief for the rest of the team, through the good times and the bad...he too knows the ending. Like Kichi, he is also excellent at computer art.
== Background == [[12]]
Trivia
- All the characters in Jyuunishi are based on real people - with these exceptions: Yuan and Ryu. Of the four main characters, three of them are the creators of the comic - but the fourth has an invaluable role nevertheless.
- You may note that all the European characters except Lian can speak English... this may be important later!
- The comic is called Jyuunishi because of the codenames of the characters - when they are carrying out an operation they are referred to as an animal of the Chinese Zodiac - note they are referred to in Japanese, not English.
- Kenji is sometimes referred to by the other characters as "monkey-boy" - a direct reference to his codename - and in real life, too. ^.^
- "Hyakutake" is actually a last name - the real Hyakutake did not realise this when she named her character.
- Geist is actually the German word for "ghost" - the creators found it difficult to name the Geists, but eventually settled on a slightly more unusual term.
