Description and History of Spider Monkey

Things were going swell for young and impetuous Jim North as he entered the family business: Amateur Dramatics. On one fateful day, however, just as he and the rest of his acting troupe were entering the second act of My Fair Monkey, the evilfarious Dr. Bob crashed the show and set off the sprinkler system. All of the actors were completely soaked . . . all except plucky young Jim, who had left the stage in order to foil Bob's escape attempt. Little did he know that his actions had been watched carefully from the audience by playboy billionaire Keon Dawg, aka The Masked Monkey! Dawg quickly adopted the peppy youngster as his ward. The fact that Jim's family was still alive and Jim was already a full-grown and independant adult at the time did not deter the influental playboy in the slightest.

After a short time, Dawg revealed his alter ego to Jim and offered to teach him in the ways of superherodom. Jim eagerly accepted and soon became Monkey Lad, the boy monkey! Or . . . monkey boy. Or . . . whatever. Anyway! He spent many successful years as the Masked Monkey's faithful sidekick, usually spouting incoherent catchphrases, pointing out the excruciatingly obvious, being kidnapped by various villains, and practicing other fine skills passed down to him by his mentor.

During the 70's, Monkey Lad decided to strike out on his own and created a superteam known as the Big Boys. The team's members consisted primarily of sidekicks of other superheros . . . but, unlike Monkey Lad, most of these only joined because their respective superheroes had fired them. The team disbanded fairly quickly because of creative differences (most of the blame was laid on Monkey Lad for being a quote "big poopie head" unquote), but has reformed many times over the years with new - though generally no less whiny - membership rosters.

After the disbanding of the Big Boys, the Masked Monkey took on a new Monkey Lad and the original Monkey Lad decided to retire from the superhero life. Then, in the early 80's, he returned to the scene once more as the masked vigilante Spider Monkey! One day, while tooling around his apartment wondering what to do with his retired self, he was severely creeped out by a common household spider. This led him to realize that sitting around doing nothing but watching mid-afternoon cable TV was starting to make him stir crazy, so he designed a new suit with new abilities and hit the streets with a whole new superhero identity!

Along with all the aforementioned skills he learned from MM, Spider Monkey has the ability to cling to virtually any surface as long as he can spread his arms and legs across it as far as they can go, swing rapidly from branch to branch, throw specially made nets stored in the folds of his cape, and has a small array of nifty gizmos with a spider-banana theme to them. Like, he's got this spider-banana shaped blender. He doesn't really know what he was thinkin' when he made that one up, either. He's also managed to pick up some mon-kai-do, though Masked Monkey swears up and down that he doesn't remember teaching it or anything else useful to him.

In between his jobs as mild mannered newsstand owner and fighter of crime, Spider Monkey spends most of his time teaching each new Monkey Lad how to duck and roll, playing RPGs, making sure his apartment is spider-free, and acting as a reserve member for the Giga Squad Team.
