TNE follows the lives of two goth elves living in alterna-Boston and attending the Magical Institute of Technology. There are no humans in alterna-Boston, only magical creatures differentiated primarily by size. The strip is hand-drawn in a traditional newspaper 4-panel layout, then scanned and colored & lettered on the computer.
The Naked Elf is a simple comic, devoted to the notion that love and occasionally even sexuality can be sweet and endearing.
Characters
Sylphi: Sylphiana Dendrobates Tinctorius Hyacinth Nephele Oenone Engel is an over-achieving senior at the Magical Institute of Technology, majoring in Mana Engineering. Her current thesis (if she can manage to keep from changing it again) involves trying to collect enough latent mana from the depths of space to power unmanned crafts on inter-stellar voyages.
She loves birds, cheese, dancing, overblown lacy dresses, gothy music, industrial music, androgenous elves, and pretending to be harder core than she really is. She (like most elves in her world) is just a bit over four feet tall. She's an only child (and it shows,) was adopted and raised by two blobs, has a habit of randomly catching on fire, and just got married to Twim.
Twim: Twim is working on his PhD in Magical Astrophysics at the Magical Institute of Technology. His thesis is currently titled, "The Incipient Angles of Earth, Jupiter, and Mars: measuring variant quantum flux in the space-time continuum along the projected path of satelite 24-b." Like Sylphi, he is a gothy little elf. He has two frogs named Bill and Ted, a chamelion named Lilly, awesome silverware forged in the cracks of Mount Doom--er, Fuji, actually--and loves cheese. And butter. He is about Sylphi's height.
Twim's a much quieter person than Sylphi--he's generally competent, remembers to get directions, and doesn't randomly catch on fire. Relations with his conservative family are strained--they disapprove of Magical Astrophysics because they see it as too applied a science, and wish he'd followed in his brother's footsteps and gotten a degree in math. He is currently hiding his marriage from the rest of the family, as well as harboring a run-away cousin.
Serif: Twim's cousin Serif ran away from home and came to live on the spare couch in his dorm after her mother discovered that she was talking to boys on 'MySpace.com' and threw a fit which included throwing her computer out a second-story window. She seems to be adjusting to life in the city pretty well, though her conservative upbringing has left her a bit sheltered. She's the most cynical member of the cast.
Serif is not an elf, but a fire sprite, half elf and half fire elemental. As a result, she's significantly taller than her cousin, and can summon fire at will. Unlike Sylphi, though, she doesn't randomly catch on fire, which is a good thing.
Frankie: Francis, better known as Frankie, also known as Mr. Tall, Dark, and Gothy, is a shapeshifting fairy who does special ops work for the government. For all that his job is Serious Business, Frankie is a light hearted and fun-loving guy, with a penchant for mischief. He has many fangirls, and is one of Twim and Sylphi's principle friends at club. Frankie and Serif are on slightly less friendly terms, as Serif thinks he's rather odd.
Space Pixie: Ah, pixies. They're always around, even if they're too small to do much. Space Pixie and Serif once dated, through the magic of the internet. Once they discovered their 'natural incompatibility', that is, height difference, they broke up, but remained friends. Serif's mother is convinced that Space Pixie kidnapped Serif, despite the fact that this defies all logic.
