Changing the passwords
Most people that use the Internet are aware that there is a need to change passwords on a fairly regular basis in order to improve security. Just how important you feel this is will depend on how paranoid you are and how likely it is that someone will want to try and get into your accounts. There can also be more mundane reasons, such as living in a shared house or having to use a public computer while your own is being repaired.
For those with new accounts:
The Comic Genesis registration system has been updated (May 2008) and new accounts are no longer issued with a password. They are provided with a link to the password changing facility and need to create a password for themselves.
This is easy to do:
Comic Account / FTP password
To change the password for your comic account:
- Go to the Password Manager section of SiteAdmin.
- Type your comic's name (not the url) into the "Comic Name" field.
- Type your new password into the "Custom Password" field.
- Type your new password again into the "Verify Custom Password" field.
- Click the "Generate New Password" button.
Note that the "Generate New Password" button does not create a new password at random. This button will cause an email to be sent to the email address that you originally registered the comic with. Go to your email and look for the new message. It is normally "instantaneous" (within a few minutes), but may take up to a few hours depending on server load and traffic. Note that your old password is still in effect!
Also note that you don't need to enter the old password anywhere.
This message will have an activation code that you will need to submit before your new password will start working. Once you have received your activation code, go back to the Password Manager and enter the activation code into the bottom field.
It is easier and more accurate to copy and paste than it is to manually type it in, but make sure that if you copy it that you don't add a space on the end by accident.
After you've entered the activation code, click the "Activate" box.
If the change was successful, you'll get a confirmation screen stating so. Your new password is now the one to use.
Changing the Forum password
The forum password is changed in pretty much the same way as most forums, but for those new to forums it's included here.
- Log into the forum.
- Click on "Profile" at the top of the page.
- In the top section, fill in the spaces for current password, new password and confirm new password.
- Click "Submit" at the bottom of the page.
Once you have your accounts set up, most people don't bother changing passwords. But if you do, make sure you keep track of which one you're using.
