Deus Ex Magica is a pseudo-manga webcomic by Jonny Deutsch. It follows the steps of Rhince Vheras trying to become a maga and the people he encounters on his way.

Characters
Rhince Vheras
The main character of the story. He wants to become a maga and has travelled far and long to enter the magaversity of the talon. There he encounters Sha-mon Hyio and Kerra Pirune.
Kerra Pirune
Kerra lost her little brother many years ago and wants to become a maga to strengthen her magic abilities to be able to help other people. She meets Rhince for the first time in front of the magaversities main entrance.
Sha-mon Hyio
Sha-mon bumps into Rhince on his way to the magaversity as well. For some reason his horse starting sprinting and stopped at Rhince. Sha-mon accuses Rhince of hexing his horse and calls him a lowly beggar due to Rhince's simple and old clothes. Rhince in turn makes fun of Sha-mon's name as it sounds similar to "Shame on you!". Both are off to a bad start.
Story

Chapter 1: A long journey's end
Rhince the main character has travelled long and far to get into the magaversity of the talon. He wants to become a maga for whatever reason. Early on he uses magic to retrieve his staff which he dropped doing a victory jump after finally seeing the magaversity from far away for the first time. He uses the words "Come Back" to retrieve the staff.
On his way to the magaversity he bumps into Sha-mon Hyio who is riding on his horse towards the magaversity as well. Sha-mon makes fun of Rhince's clothes calling him a beggar and Rhince makes fun on Sha-mon's name, it sounding similar to "Shame on you". Not a good start. Both depart in different directions for now.
After entering the town around the magaversity, Rhince decides to take a nap at the next inn to recover his strength. He falls asleep immediately and wakes up late at night. Seeing as he cant enter the magaversity at this hour he decides to take a walk by moonlight. Whilst outside he encouters two thugs trying to rob another man. Without hesitation he intervenes and overcomes both of them using his one and only magic spell "Come Back" using his staff to knock them out from behind.
A telepathic talking crow, Archimedes, spots him and accuses him of using harmful magic in town and orders him to follow it back to the headmaster of the magaversity. There the magaversity soon gathers that Rhince only defended himself. Seeing him as a potential apprentice he tells him to come back in two days for the apprentice tryouts. Rhince is then escorted back to the inn by Archimedes.
Chapter 2: The three towers
On the day of the apprentice tryouts Rhince walks to the front entrance of the magaversity where he meets Kerra Pirune, a fellow apprentice applicant. They introduce themselves and become friends. Inside there are many other applicants including Sha-mon who spots Rhince coming in. Another fight starts between both of them until the headmaster enters and welcomes everyone.
To become an apprentice they each have to pass a simlpe test: Cast a magic spell on their own. When it's Kerra's turn she too uses a staff retrieval spell with the words "Come Back". Confused by this Rhince fails to cast his own spell and thus is told to leave. Rhince pleads he used magic the other night and that Archimedes could comfirm this. The headmaster agrees to wait and ask Archimedes.
Kerra and Rhince now both confused by each others actions ask each other if she/he is Iliana/her little brother. Realising this is not the case Kerra breaks out in tears and tells Rhince the story, how she lost her little brother Wyllyhm years ago. When he fell off a cliff she accidently used magic for the first time and tried to save him. But she wasn't strong enough and her brother fell.
Meanwhile the test has ended and everyone has passed except for Rhince who is called into the headmaster's office to wait for Archimedes. Upon his arrival he confirms Rhince can do magic and after another successful attempt to cast his spell, he is accepted as an apprentice.
Rhince returns and goes the hall of staves where all apprentices and their staves have to be initiated. All of them are then divided into three tower groups, Rhince, Kerra and Sha-mon being of them.
After the initiations all of them have to get their magaversity robes from the tailors, if they haven't, yet. On their way there Rhince tells Kerra how he met Sha-mon. They end up getting into an argument and Kerra leaves. Rhince regrets it soon after and as soon as he gets his robe he goes back and apologizes to Kerra who is just trying to heave her heavy luggage up the tower. She accepts his apology and asks him to help carry her stuff.
Just in that moment Sha-mon walks by talking bad about Rhince to Jerr, another apprentice. Rhince gets mad but Kerra stops him and makes him promise that he doesn't try to get back at Sha-mon for what he does. He promises and she seals the promise with a kiss on the cheek.
Reaching their tower room at the top a wisp enters inviting them to dinner on behalf of the headmaster. At dinner they find out that their room has a stove and fireplace for a reason: They have to cook themselves.
After dinner Rhince and Kerra enter their room again followed shortly after by Sha-mon. Before the two get into a fight again, Kerra tells them to turn around so she can get ready to go to bed and sleep. Rhince and Sha-mon end their conversation at that point and go to bed as well. That night Rhince has some kind of recurring nightnare.
