Obscured by Species is a webcomic by Jeff Mumm. It began as a series of humorous comic books and eventually evolved into a comic strip.

Contents

Premise

All individual comic strips can be read out of context, but many are a part of a larger story arc that often adds to the joke of the specific comic strip that is being read. Obscured by Species is a unique mix of fantasy, sci-fi, and pop culture.

Cast

Main Cast

There really is no main character, however the comic tends to focus on certain characters over a period of time and then at any given point will explore new characters, adding to the overall cast and world.

  • Niel, a cool, laid-back penguin who tries to remain calm and collected and is generally the straight man of the strip. Niel appeared in the first comic book, "Something's Fishy."
  • Owen, a twisted video game playing monkey who has strong opinions and a short fuse. Owen made his first appearance in the second comic book, "Mindless Zombies."
  • X52, a robotic doof who draws increasingly worse and worse comics. His comics mainly are either pointless or completely obvious and are drawn with computer-rendered stick figures. X52 was the first character introduced in Obscured by Species.
  • Ninja Pig of the North, a ninja guinea pig who really isn't a ninja, but a thief that thinks ninjas "look cool." Ninja Pig's main obstacles involve the problem with trying to rob people despite his diminutive size and "cute" demeanor. Ninja Pig of the North actually carries over from a previous comic book of Jeff Mumm's, entitled Beyond the Cage.

Supporting Cast

  • There are many background characters that sometimes will make reappearances, such as the raccoon from the first comic book. Because of the way the comic is set up, many supporting characters become main characters simply by being focused on more and more.
