A three-panel humour comic about a set of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and heterosexual characters in their day-to-day lives. The comic is meant to be a quirky, goofy look into gay lives. The comic has serious moments that don't take themselves to seriously and is meant to be fun and entertaining.

Origin

The comic was originally inspired when Pyros and a friend of his reading Boy Meets Boy when the friend commented "Wow, it shows gay people as normal people!"

Bit of an off-colour comment, wouldn't you think? That's what Pyros thought as well, and was fully inspired to create something that could aspire to the same level. Despite not having any artistic training, he has been writing since he was young and knew how to make comics from an old strip which he created in Elementary School called, Puppy The Guppy.

He began creating characters and pulled on some old writing that he had done in the past (including a theatre script that had been performed in High School by some of his friends involving a character named Eric Toni) and built what has now become the plot of Queer!

He chose the name Queer! after writing the first few pages, decided on the name because of it's dual meaning of 'homosexual' and 'wierd'. He wanted his comic to emulate both sides of the word.

It ended May 19th, 2008.

Setting

Queer! takes place in the fictional town of Everton, British Columbia. It is suggested that this is a sizable city with a high population.

Some notable places in the city include:

  • The Everton University Campus - Where Rylie and Eric go to school
  • Shiny Things Inc. - A place where shiny objects are sold
  • Pornelli Media Services - Vivian's office and studios
  • The LGBT Centre - A community center for the LGBT community
  • Everton Convention Centre - Place where conventions happen, owned by the Velvet Society
  • Abandoned Military Facility - Facility in the woods North of Everton, formerly military owned.

Everton also houses several important groups;

  • Pornelli Media Staff/Performers
  • The Municipal Government
  • The Velvet Society
  • Hillcrest's Congregation

A Few Characters

Character Bio/description
Rylie Roberts A University student with no direction, no motivation and no patience. He lives in an apartment with his roommate, Josh and is constantly annoyed by him. He is a student at Everton University studying sexuality. He also owns a large number of turtlenecks which he wears all year 'round
Josh Jones Hyper, childish and goofy, Josh is about as mature as the average 12 year old. He adores shiny things and trying to make people laugh. He is perpetually happy which might be because he's dating a famous movie star.
Eric Toni Short, cute and relatively innocent, Eric tends to be the one who tries to befriend everyone and make everyone happy. He is studying photography at Everton University and is pretty damn good at it. He also lives with Coco.
Vivian Pornelli A wealthy media mogul and high school friend of Rylie, Vivian is extremely well off. She has an illustrious career directing A-Grade gay porn and is very well known. She is also very energetic and cares a lot about people, while being very impulsive at the same time.
Coco A transgendered MtF who has yet to actually undergo any operations, but still passes as female 74.3% of the time (Eric measured) she is at heart a 100% canadian girl. She lives with Eric in their apartment and has a pet fish which she cares about and feeds. When out and about the town no one is quite sure what she does, but does it with incredible fashion sense, nice lipstick and good dresses.

Fun Facts

  • Queer! started as a gag comic on LiveJournal before it hit ComicGenesis
  • Pyros has done two other previous webcomics; Will the Cliches Never Stop? and Lost Souls, both of which were completely fantasy based and no longer available on the Internet.
  • Queer! intentionally has an exclamation mark at the end for no discernable reason
  • Despite people pointing out the obvious similarities between Queer! and Queer As Folk Pyros has not seen this series except some of the first season and therefore cannot draw inspiration from it. He does plan to watch it at some point, of course, but has not yet.
