Story Summary
Chapter 1
The story joins the freelance crew of the Haphazard, a heavily modified Ionian transport craft repaired more times than a Fiat.
On the search for yet another new Captain (their last lost due to static), they hired Nick Swift, much to the second in command's annoyance at being overruled by the ships holographic AI, Zee. An apparent bum who's only other job prospect was selling doughnuts and stupidly named hot beverages on Mars, Nick met the rest of the crew; Eugene Preston a friend he used to cruise around Luna with, and Georgina Dagenham.
Nick's first command as Captain was to head for Earth so he could attend to "a little unfinished business". As the Haphazard approached Earth orbit an unexplainable event occurred. The Earth blew up. Not only the Earth, but every human colony in the galaxy was obliterated. Nick apparently passed out and woke to find out the rest of the human race had been wiped out, he it's only survivor saved by some quick thinking and emergency surgery by the rest of the crew.
Chapter 2
After the destruction of Earth, Nick went into a state of depression and wouldn't come out of his room. The rest of the crew were unsure what to do until Nick reappeared as if nothing had happened.
In his absence, Rydra and Zee had begun to investigate the Earth's destruction, but came up with nothing. Upon looking at the information Nick believed a signal was mixed up with all the background radiation. Without the ability to completely filter out and analyse the signal Nick decides to call on an old friend to help, along with giving Zee a much needed upgrade.
Before they can leave the remains of Earth another ship arrives transmitting a distress call. The ship is of human origin, which leads Nicks to insisting they help out if they can. Upon arriving on the ship they find it deserted, and running on minimal power, without life support. After further investigation it is established the ship is the Pilgrim One, a deep space vessel that had been believed lost on its way to the Andromeda Galaxy. The ship is not entirely void of life as Nick finds a rather friendly alien creature brought back from wherever the ship had been over the last few centuries.
Upon arriving on the bridge, it is revealed that when the incident that killed the rest of the human race occurred, the ship was just entering the Sol System. Zee appears to be getting quite close with the resident AI, and becomes defensive. After discovering a little more about the ship, its mission and what happened to it the console Nick is working at explodes and knocks him unconscious. He wakes to find George is now on the ship and Rydra has run off in a panic.
Nick heads off to find Rydra, and the pair escape from a swarm of bugs that apparently took control of the ship while it was on its mission. They all eventually meet where they believe the ships shuttle bay is, only to find they've been directed somewhere else. They come upon a monstrosity of human bodies and computer components which was once a bio-mechanical computer. Zee reveals that he knew about this, but didn't say anything because he was protecting the ships AI.
Making their way through the ships service tunnels, they eventually make it to the real shuttle bay, where they manage to make their escape after setting the ship on meltdown. The bugs attempt to prevent their escape but are destroyed when Nick finally makes contact with Eugene. After the ships destruction Nick tries to comfort Zee, who left the ships AI on board so she could make sure the ship was destroyed.
Later that evening, Nick finds out that Rydra can't sleep, and finds her in the galley watching the news. After a little persuasion Rydra tells Nick about Tezic, her former lover and the crews first Captain. They then proceed to the medi-bay where Nick gives Rydra a sedative to help her sleep.

Cast
Main Cast
- Nick Swift: The new Captain of the transport ship Haphazard and the only known remaining member of the once prominant human race. He seems to be coping well at the moment after the destruction of his entire species, but it can't be too long before cracks start to form in his calm and collected exterior. Initially thought to be a bum and the worst choice for a Captain of any ship, Nick seems to be showing some of the qualities required to make command decisions. He also seems to be showing a level of maturity and intelligence that Rydra would never have guessed he was capable of.
- Rydra Crayh: An Antaran and second in command on the Haphazard, she was completely against having Nick as captain but was over-ruled. She is highly emotional and has a mood like a roller coaster, one minute she's up, the next minute she's down, and the minute after that she's strangling you with your small intestine. Cold, insecure, neurotic, anxious, irrational and a manic depressant are some of the things she's been called in the past. Rydra also has an extreme bug phobia, which almost led to her suffocation one time. The possible cause of Rydra's emotional problems was recently revealed to Nick, and Rydra now appears to have a greater respect of her once untrusted Captain.
- Eugene Preston: Eugene is an Oretan. With his prehensile tail and cat-like reflexes there's none better to pilot the Haphazard. Due to his species exceptionally long lifespan, Eugene is in his 60's in Earth years, yet is merely a hormone driven teenager by his own species reckoning. Ever since the arrival of his friend and new Captain, Eugene seems to becoming frustrated with his old friends decisions to leave him behind and look after the ship or Rydra, who is still in a weakened emotional state.
- Georgina Dagenham: George is the engineer on the Haphazard and keeps her ticking over. Very proud of her ship, she spends most of her time in the engine room, and finds it very difficult to sleep without the hum of the engine core to sooth her. She's a Pratarian, a feline evolved species, with an exceptional sense of smell and an uncanny knack to get into tight spaces. Perfect for someone who deals with mehcanical repair on a daily basis.
- Zee: The best in holographic artificial intelligence (HAI), 25 years ago. Zee is integral to the Haphazard and it's operations, often acting as the ships equivalent to a Space Admin. Science Officer. Most of the day to day running of the ship however, is performed by a non-AI, standard computing unit. Zee's a little quirky, and due to static, indirectly caused the ships previous captain to be killed in the most, horrible, horrible way.
