The advanced options in the siteadmin explained
For those that don't know, the siteadmin has additional options. Most of them you don't normally need to worry about or alter, but they are explained here for those that are curious.
How to see the advanced options
- Go to the siteadmin page and log in to your account.
- Click on your comic (should have a black Comic Genesis logo on the left).
- Click on "Comic Data"
- Set "Advanced Options" to "Yes"
- Click on "Submit" at the bottom of the page.
If the list of options remains the same, click on "Submit" again. You should now see a long list of additional options with [ADVANCED] in the right hand column.
Important! Be very careful when changing these settings!
What do they mean?
All the options are listed here, including the non-advanced ones.
- Comic Name: This mainly just affects what you see on the list of comics (if you have more than one) when you first log into the siteadmin. Does not appear to interact with any Keentags.
- Name Sort Order: You can ignore this one. This is an element from the Guide from KeenSpace. This option was available if your comic did not appear in the right place alphabetically.
- Comic Directory (/d): Do not change! This option tells the server which folder in the public_html section to place the completed non-index, non-extra html code files.
- Comic Directory (/w): Do not change! As above, except that this folder is for the html files for displaying a whole week's worth of strips. This option requires a weeklytemplate.html file in the workspace folder in order to work, but it's a Keenspot Premium only option anyway, so you can ignore it.
- Comic Directory ( ): Not recommended that this be changed. This option tells the server where to place the html files generated for any files placed in the workspace/webpages folder. Normally, this is the root folder of the public_html section.
- Comic Directory (/images): Do not change! This option tells the server where to place the files that originate from the workspace/images folder.
- Workspace Directory (/workspace/comics): Do not change! This option tells the server which folder to check for new comics.
- Workspace Directory (/workspace/webpages): Do not change! This option tells the server where the additional webpages are located.
- If not index.html, which file should be shown?: Can be changed, but does not appear to work at this time. This option is here for those comics that don't want the latest comic to be the first thing a reader sees. Update: This option has been turned off and is no longer available.
- index.html template name (indextemplate.html): Do not change! This option tells the server what the name is of the file to use to create the index.html file.
- YYYYMMDD.html template name (dailytemplate.html): Do not change! As above, but this option tells the server which file to use to create the daily pages for the archive. The files created end up in the public_html/d folder.
- Weekly template name (weeklytemplate.html): Do not change! This option tells the server which file to use to create the weekly html files. The files created from this end up in the public_html/w folder. If you want to have weekly files, you need to create a weeklytemplate.html file and place it in the workspace folder. As stated above, weekly is a Keenspot Premium only option, so you can ignore this one as well.
- Comic Prefix ( ): Leave blank. This option is available in case you want to run two comics in the one account. It ends up creating a lot of unwanted headaches, so the better option is to create a new comic account for your new comic and add it to your forum account in the siteadmin.
- Comic Address ( ): Leave blank. This is an old option from the Guide days. This is depreciated.
- Advanced Comic Settings (On/Off): This toggles the Advanced settings between hidden (Off) and visible so that you can alter them (On). It's advisable to leave the options hidden unless you're changing something as it's too easy to accidentally break your comic and then not know why.
- Autoupdate comic (Yes/No): This option is available if you don't want the server to process your comic. There are two main reasons to do this 1: You do all your own code and don't want to use AutoKeen or 2: You have finished with the comic and don't plan to update it again.
- Update Offset time: This option is available in order to set what time the comic will update. This is further explained here.
- Comic Description: Write out a short description about your comic here. This is used in a few places, mainly the Guide which is depreciated so it's not that important. Brevity is endorsed.
